The scheduled cuts in lone parent benefits will hit directly the wellbeing of many children. This is harsh punishment for children who have done no wrong at all. Britain already has more children living in poverty than almost any other European Union country. When these cuts are implemented, many young children in Britain will suffer even greater deprivation. From April, payments of lone parent premiums to new claimants will cease altogether. The Prime Minister claims that benefits must be cut to release funds for education and health. But children cannot learn if they are hungry.
